Introduction to Scenario Planning

Description

Scenario planning is an intentional activity conducted by a team or organization to help prepare for and respond to changes in the operating environment that could affect your ability to work as planned. It is also a process to help you monitor and document activity adaptations resulting from those changes.

While some organizations and teams embed elements of scenario planning into their strategic planning and work planning efforts, many of us do not appreciate the value of such an exercise until something beyond our control emerges as a potential or real driver of change in how we work. Such external conditions can have negative implications, like the COVID-19 pandemic, or positive implications, like a cease-fire after a conflict.

Being familiar with scenario planning thinking and methodology will help you and your team prepare effectively when circumstances outside your control impact your ability to implement your activity as planned.

This course will enable you to:

  • Understand the value of scenario planning for effective program implementation and adaptation
  • Learn how to facilitate a process with your team to develop a scenario plan, alternative approaches for implementation, and a structure for adapting plans based on context changes
